TIP OF THE WEEK
Shimano Sedona
What type of reel is best for spin casting?

Once you have chosen the correct rod, it is very important to get the right reel to use light line. An open face reel works much better than a closed face reel when using light line (an open face reel is a reel that the line is exposed from the outside). Open face reels typically have a better drag system and allow for smoother casting.

When choosing and open face reel, look for reels with a metal spool. Metal spools allow the line to go on and off the reel much more smoothly. Then, it is important to match the rod with the size reel you are fishing with. Choose an open face reel with a metal spool that balances the rod and reel together. A balanced rod will not feel heavier at the end that the reel is on, but it allows the weight of the rod to be balanced evenly.

A perfect reel for a 6’6” rod like the SLS series is a Shimano Sedona 1500 FB. This reel balances the rod perfectly and allows for smooth casting as well as a good drag system. The right reel is not always an expensive one, but a smooth one that fits your rod. Click here for more information on this reel.
